Billings Farm & Museum
The Billings Farm & Museum is located in Woodstock, Vt. Frederick Billings started it in 1871. Frederick Billings started out as a lawyer in California lawyer and went on the build railroads. He became president of the Northern Pacific Railroad and made such a name for himself they named a city after him. They call it Billings, Montana. He turned to farming and became one of our nation's first conservationists.
Billings imported Alderney cattle from the Isle of Jersey in Great Britain. His Jersey cows became one of the best herds of Jerseys in America.
When you get to the Billings Farm & Museum, they've got a good self-guided tour that lets you see how a farm works and lets you see the cows, sheep and horses. You can wander through the dairy barn and calf nursery. Time your stop in the milk room for about 3 in the afternoon, the cows will be in for their afternoon milking and you can show your kids where milk comes from. You can also explore the horse barn and the grounds when you're through with the cows. The Museum has all sorts of programs and activities to explain what's going on. The Billings Farm & Museum is in Woodstock. They're open almost every day from the end of April to the end of October and some weekends through the winter. Check their website for the latest information. They've got a dairy bar that offers a farmer's picnic lunch and snacks. The farm is worth a few visits every year as everything about farming changes with the seasons.
